BIOGRAPHY

Bio_Pic.jpg

Jeff “J.M.” Johns is a self-taught mosaicist and wood-working artist known for his signature ungrouted technique where he leverages equal spacing, depth, and painted tile sides to create negative space and the illusion of grout between the tiles. Each of his mosaics contains hidden messages, symbols, or “Easter egg” tiles -- another trademark of his unique style.

Studying Communication Design and Art Education at Kutztown University, Johns was trained in many aspects of fine arts, 2D and 3D arts, and graphic design, but never received formal training in mosaics. Showing an aptitude for art at a young age, he leveraged his skills as a way to communicate particularly after he was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD during college.

His first ever mosaic was featured at the “Alien Art Ransom” exhibit in Seattle, WA in 1997-98. After college, he put the art world on the back burner to pursue a career in sales and operations management. During this time away from gallery pieces, he continued to hone his craft, eventually developing his signature ungrouted style. He did this by creating smaller, personalized mosaics for friends and family as a thank you for their continued support of his artistic endeavors.

In early 2020, he recommitted his efforts to creating gallery work once again, not knowing what the year soon laid in store. Two causes that are of utmost importance to Johns are racial justice and veteran care, which are the subject matter of his two latest projects.

In addition to his affection for art, Johns is fortunate to live out his other life passion for fitness as the owner of a personal training business. He continues to accept commissions for his custom tile mosaics.

Johns resides in Newark, Delaware with his calligrapher wife -- who is a source of inspiration and support-- and their two dogs, and three cats. Amongst his favorite titles, he relishes being “Umple Turkey” and “Tio Jeff” to his four nephews and nieces.
